Studying: Is It Worth It?

In my opinion, studying The Rez Sisters is worth it. It is entertaining through the swearing and suggestive conversations that the women have, resulting in constant outbursts of laughter in the classroom. The swearing and suggestive conversations make the play more realistic and entertaining because most texts that students study in an English class do not contain those things. The play brings topics to life that are not necessarily part of a students everyday thinking, such as the pros and cons of First Nations living on reserves, or the importance of unity within your family. Most times when we hear about First Nations it is from an outsiders perspective, but the play gave us an opportunity to see things from a First Nations perspective.

  1. I totally agree with how the use of profanity not only made the classroom laugh, but also made the book better, as it shows the true expression of the women during arguments. The characters were raw, realistic, and exposed, making the play more enjoyable to read, whether making the class laugh, or learning the different perspective of life in the eyes of the First Nations.

  4. I completely agree with your final point. We often don't think about first nations people in a personal way. We tend think of them more in the abstract as you would when talking about the moon. This book however allows us to see their perspective, it makes them more real (had to remove my comment to fix a grammatical error sorry)

  5. I agree. I think this book was written in a unique way which helped to keep readers our age (teenagers) intrigued which is hard to do. This story was always striking conversation, which I believe was important because it helps everyone reading it to further understand it and have multiple outlooks from multiple people due to the many discussions. I also think that without the choice of text used in the story many of the conversations we had as a class wouldn't have happened because not as many people would have been intrigued.

  6. Did the play change your perspective then? Do you think we should study more literature that involves First Nations?
